Doctor Princess Mathilde Maria Josefa Anna Xaveria of Saxony Duchess of Saxony

Doctor Princess Mathilde of Saxony was born on 17 January 1936 in Bamberg, Bavaria.

Biography

After graduating from secondary school in Bregenz, Austria, she moved together with the Margrave’s family to Munich-Harlaching. There she lived together with her brother Prince Albert, reunited with their parents in Munich after a long time of separation. The children were looked after by their nanny Maria Schwimmer.

Princess Mathilde studied medicine in Munich and completed these studies with a doctorate degree. Doctor Princess Mathilde of Saxony practised as a paediatrician and specialist in skin diseases in Munich, Innsbruck, Zurich and Davos.

She married Prince Johannes Heinrich of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha in Andechs Abbey on 12 November 1968. Their son Prince Johannes Albert was born on 17 November 1969 in Innsbruck; he died by accident while climbing at the Ortler in South Tyrol on 21 August 1987.
