
Professor Doctor Prince Karl August of Saxe-Gessaphe
Professor Doctor Prince Karl August of Saxe-Gessaphe was born on 1 January 1 1958 in Mexico City as the youngest son of Doctor Prince Roberto Alexander de Gessaphe and Princess Maria Anna of Saxony Duchess of Saxony.
He attended school from 1963 to 1975 in Mexico City, Hechingen and Munich. Having passed the A-levels in Munich, he studied law at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich (LMU) from 1975 to 1980. In parallel, he studied the Theory of Composition with Anton Ruppert. His compositions were performed, inter alia, at the Amerikahaus in Munich. After having passed both judicial examinations in Munich, he attained a doctorate at the LMU in 1986, graduating summa cum laude. Till 1992, he worked as an Academic Council at the LMU.
Prince Karl August received a scholarship from the “Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft” (German Research Foundation) for writing his habilitation thesis, which he completed in 1998. This was followed by Deputy Professorships in Munich, Bielefeld, Regensburg, Frankfurt, Cologne and Dresden. Finally, he accepted an appointment by the FernUniversität in Hagen (Distance Teaching University of Hagen) in 2003. He there holds the Chair of Bürgerliches Recht, Zivilprozessrecht, Internationales Privatrecht und Rechtsvergleichung (Civil Law, Civil Procedure Law, Private International Law and Comparative Law). He is author of the teaching books „Internationales Privatrecht und UN-Kaufrecht“ (Private International Law and United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods) and “Zwangsvollstreckung” (Law of Compulsory Enforcement) (together with Markus Neumaier). In addition, he contributed to considerable commentaries on the German Civil Code, inter alia in the fields of marriage law and child’s name law.
In 1998 he founded the Deutsch-Mexikanische Juristenvereinigung e.V. (German-Mexican Lawyer’s Association) in Munich, whose chairman he is since then. The DMJV has held various conferences in Germany and Mexico.
In his first marriage, Prince Karl August was married to Karen, née Kurth (* 19 November 1962), member of an opera choir. In his second marriage, he is married to Princess Anke Lioba of Saxe-Gessaphe, née Kunert (* 11 March 1978 in Neuss), a fully-qualified lawyer. He has four children.
